Annual grants for Research about Procurement Processes and Competition

Among the projects for which the Swedish Competition Authority has awarded this year’s research grants are the impact of accounting on procurement regulations and the latest methods for tracking public procurement cartels. Most of the projects focus on procurement processes. The grants total more than SEK 9 million.

The Swedish Competition Authority awards special grants for research about public procurement processes and competition-related issues. Such studies are to promote knowledge and improvements in these fields.

According to Director General Rikard Jermsten, “Conducting research and acquiring new understanding of procurement and competition matters is vitally important. Both areas are in constant flux and involve large amounts of money. Consumers and taxpayers are the ultimate winners when public procurement processes and free competition work the way they should.”

A number of the projects for which grants have been awarded face a time horizon of up to three years. The wide-ranging studies shed light on questions that vary from evaluation of methods for tracking public procurement cartels (Johan Lundberg, Umeå University) to Human Rights violations in Nordic Public Procurement (Stefan Brehm, Lund University).

Björn Tyrefors Hinnerich at the Research Institute of Industrial Economics will be conducting an evaluation of the efficiency of private ambulance care providers and the repercussions for procurement processes.

Stefan Olsson, Professor of Financial Law at Karlstad University, will be reviewing valuations of procurement processes and the impact of accounting on procurement regulations.

Mihaly Fazekas at the University of Cambridge will be studying Public Procurement Cartels: Novel Measurement and Insights.

David Granlund at Umeå University will be looking at impact on price from competition by parallel imports and therapeutic options for patent-protected drugs.
